| Background Info: |
After issuing "Traditional Chinese Costume Postage Stamps - Cing Civil Official Bu Fu" on January 20, 2005, Taiwan Post is following up with another set of four stamps featur- ing square motifs - cilin, lion, leopard and tiger - from bu fu court dresses worn by Cing Dynasty military officials from the first to fourth rank.
The dress code of imperial China was strict and governed everything from cut and color to material and pattern, all of which indicated a certain status and rank. The court dresses for Cing Dynasty military officials were embellished with Mandarin squares, one each for the front and the back. Each square was embroidered with an animal: a cilin for the first rank, a lion for the second, a leopard for the third, a tiger for the fourth, a bear for the fifth, a liger for the sixth, a rhino for the seventh and eighth, and a seahorse for the ninth rank. The background of these animal motifs included embroidery of 8 auspiciousness and 8 treasures, and the sun, which represents justness and honor. |
