Background Info:
Because of the movement of active geologic plates (which created Taiwan’s mountains) and because it is transected by the Tropic of Cancer, Taiwan is uniquely endowed with scenery and natural ecologies of the tropics, the subtropics and the temperate zone. To share with the world the beauty of Formosa - which means "beautiful isle" in Portuguese - and to attract tourists both from Taiwan and abroad, Chunghwa Post has chosen four scenic spots as the themes of four stamps, including the Jhongshan Building, Taroko Gorge, Yeliou and Sun Moon Lake.
The designs of the stamps follow:
(1)Jhongshan Building: Located in Yangmingshan National Park, Jhongshan Building is a work of architecture in the Chinese palace style that is nestled in the mountains. Its green tile roof and flying eaves create an impression of a large eagle spreading its wings. It is magnificent and very famous.
(2)Taroko Gorge: Located in Taroko National Park, it is known for its impressive deep gorges. The stamp features Changchun Shrine, one of Taroko Gorge’s famous scenic spots. The shrine stands in a mountain niche, where spring water gushes out from the mountain wall to form a waterfall. The scenery is simply breathtaking.
(3)Yeliou: Located in the North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area, Yeliou is a long and narrow cape that juts out from the north coast of Taiwan. It is the most famous geologic park in northern Taiwan. The stamp features its noble looking Queen’s Head Rock. Standing against a background of blue sky, this rock marvelously conveys the wonder of nature.
(4)Sun Moon Lake: Located in Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area, the lake is ringed by mountain ridges, and its water is very clear. As the clouds and colors of the sky change, so does the appearance of the lake. It provides beautiful scenery from whatever angle you gaze upon it and no matter how near or far.
