To encourage our citizens to participate in positive leisure activities that help to keep them fit, Chunghwa Post is once again issuing a set of four outdoor activities stamps, featuring "Paragliding," "Hang Gliding," "Ultra light Aircraft" and "Parasailing." The designs of the stamps follow:
(1) Paragliding: Paragliders were invented by modifying parachutes. Paragliders, which like parachutes have no motors, are launched from hills or cliffs instead of from airplanes. A paraglider wing consists of a row of fabric cells, each with a vent at the front. Moving through the air keeps these cells inflated and creates lift. And that, a paraglider rises.
(2) Hang Gliding: A product of human fantasy about having wings like a bird, a hang glider is quiet, lightweight and without a motor. Emulating how flying squirrels spread their gliding membranes, hang gliders combine the softness of a parachute with the simple framework of a kite, allowing the pilot to make use of rising air currents and control techniques to soar and glide in the sky.
(3) Ultralight Aircraft: Ultralight aircraft are sometimes called microlight aircraft or powered paragliders. They originated when people added small motors to hang gliders to generate power. With advances in technology, including added horsepower and improvements to aircraft structure, it is now possible for ultralight aircraft to travel longer distances.
(4) Parasailing: The sport of parasailing can be aquatic or terrestrial, depending upon whether the parasail rider is towed behind a boat or behind an automobile. The tow vehicle drives against the wind and sends the rider up into the air where the rider enjoys the exciting and wonderful sensation of flying.
