ROCUPEX’04 TAIPEI will be held at National Taiwan University Sports Center from August 6 to 10, 2004. To coordinate with the great event, Chunghwa Post has, at the suggestion of the National Palace Museum, based a souvenir sheet on a Sung Dynasty painting “Listening to the Lute.” The stamps have been planned by Mr. Chien Sung-tsun from the National Palace Museum. Allegedly painted by Li Sung, born in Ciantang, Jhejiang Province, the painting “Listening to the Lute” is in ink and color on silk hanging scroll, 104.5 cm. wide and 177.5 cm. long. This painting was set in a garden with a tall tree and unique-looking rocks. A scholar was sitting leisurely on a daybed under the tree listening to a lute and playing with a curio, with a duster in his hand and his left leg bent across. Beside him were several beautiful ladies, who were burning incense, holding a flower or fanning the scholar. The top of the daybed was covered with a soft mat seat made of rattan, whose loose weave let through air and was therefore suitable for the summer. On the bed there was a legless reclining chair with straight top rail and adjustable back. In front of the daybed was a square waisted incense stand with straight legs and a continuous floor stretcher. The stand was used for holding an incense burner and was in the same style as the daybed.
