Dr. George Leslie Mackay was born in Oxford County, Ontario, Canada in 1844. In 1872, he landed in Taiwan at Tamsui to preach Christianity. On June 2, 1901, he died of throat cancer in Tamsui. Once he arrived, he devoted his entire life to Taiwan. The year 2001 is the hundredth anniversary of Dr. Mackay's death, and to cherish the memory of his unselfish devotion to Taiwan, and so to strengthen the bonds of friendship between Taiwan and Canada, this Directorate is issuing a stamp to note the centennial anniversary of Mackay's passing. Scheduled to be released on June 1, 2001, the stamp has a denomination of NT$25.00. A portrait of Dr. Mackay is the central focus of the stamp. To the left of the portrait is a scene of Mackay pulling a patient's tooth outdoors, and to its right is a building of Oxford College, the first western school in Taiwan, whose design and construction were supervised by Dr. Mackay. The stamp is painted by Mr. Lee Kuang-chi and printed in color deep-etch offset by China Color Printing Co., Inc.

In 1880, Dr. Mackay founded the Tamsui Mackay Hospital, which was the first Western hospital in the northern part of Taiwan, helping countless patients, especially lepers and patients living in remote areas. The hospital was the forerunner of Mackay Memorial Hospital. In 1882, he founded the Oxford College in Tamsui and introduced Western scientific knowledge to Taiwan. In 1883, he founded the Tamsui Girls' School, leading the movement toward educating women in Taiwan. Today's Aletheia University, Mackay Junior College of Nursing, Tamkang High School and Taiwan Theological College all trace their roots to schools he founded. He also made great contributions to education in Taiwan. And as a missionary, Dr. Mackay never stopped teaching about Christianity, preaching the spirit of love and devotion to Christ. In addition, to enhance the welfare of farmers and raise agricultural production, he introduced seeds of many kinds of vegetables, fruits and flowers from Europe and America to Taiwan. Through other missionaries and believers, he encouraged farmers to plant these seeds, making a major contribution to Taiwan's agriculture.
