There are many sayings and beliefs on the origin of using twelve animals to mark the Lunar New Year cycle. One interesting legend is that Lord Buddha summoned all the animals before him and named the years after the twulve animals in the order they appeared, i.e. the Rat, the Ox, the Tiger, the Rabbit, the Dragon, the Snake, the Horse, the Ram, the Monkey, the Cock, the Dog and the Pig.
The designs of this set of special stamps depict four embroidered patterns of the Ox. Embroidery has been an art as well as a popular pastime in the Chinese commmunity for many centuries. It is used to adorn clothing, bedding, furnture etc. giving an atmosphere of prosperty and happiness. For this reason many items of embroidery are created for festive and ritual use, especially during New Year celebrations.
